STAR BAKERS CROWNED AT THE GREAT CHRISTMAS BAKE OFF

09/01/2015

The Ridings care home hosted the final of a national Christmas-themed bake off competition.

Resident and chef teams from Gracewell Healthcare homes across the country competed for Star Baker at The Ridings on Thursday 11th December.

The ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ were the inspiration for the baking competition with each bake being based on a verse from the popular festive song.

Artisan baker, Simon Jarman, from The Loaf in Fleet, was on hand to cast his expert eye over the cakes and give advice on how to achieve the perfect Christmas bake.

Simon said: “The standard has been excellent and there have been some delicious cakes on show today with inspiring decorations.

Baking is great fun, young or old, and it is an excellent way to bring people together. Well done to everyone who took part.

The winning resident team was from The Ridings and Activities Coordinator Leanne Applewhite said she was delighted the home was crowned top of the bakes for their ‘Seven Swans a Swimming’ themed fruit cake.

She said: “The Christmas bake was a real team effort. The residents were involved from the recipe ideas to the decorations on top.”

The winning chef team was from Salisbury Manor in Salisbury and Chef James Butterfield said he was delighted to win the award with his Christmas cake.

He said: “There’s been a lot of anticipation amongst the chef teams about the Christmas bake off as we are all very competitive and we are over the moon to have won.

Senior Director of Operations for the care home group, Phillip Smith, was also part of the judging team and said he was impressed by the high level of baking on show.

He said: “Bake Off fever gripped the nation this summer and was a firm favourite with our residents so we thought that we would hold our own Christmas version of the competition.

It’s been a fantastic day and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a judge. The cakes were delicious and I would like to congratulate everyone who took part – you are all Star Bakers!
