Matthew Shippey joined Gracewell of High Wycombe in 2017.
Part of Matthew’s role involves working closely alongside the chefs in a supportive role making desserts and assisting in delivering an outstanding dining service.
Gracewell of High Wycombe’s Head Chef, Simon Lewis, said: “I put Matthew forward for the competition because I had noticed he was skilled in flavour combinations and had a great passion for being resident focused. Being a former regional winner and national finalist myself, I know how hard it is to be shortlisted – so for a Kitchen Assistant to reach this stage is just an amazing achievement. We are all proud of Matthew.”
Matthew said: “I love everything about my job. Not just the little details but also the big, main details. I thoroughly enjoy working alongside each and every team member at the home. If I was to choose, I would say the thing I love the most is working to provide every resident with delicious meals throughout their stay at Gracewell of High Wycombe.
“I feel extremely grateful for all the help and support I have received from Simon and the home in the last few weeks leading up to the regional final. I still can't believe that I made it this far. I am extremely nervous but at the same time, I am excited and happy.”
Matthew’s favourite dish to cook is the lemon drizzle cake. Matthew added: “It’s a great dessert to make because residents, the team and visitors always compliment on how soft, fluffy and delicious it is.”
Matthew’s top tips for becoming a chef within the care sector: “Smile during every moment of every day. You never know when a single smile could brighten up someone’s day. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone works as a team and don’t be upset when you make a mistake. Just learn from them.”
