Gracewell of Church Crookham Care Home Celebrates Four Weeks of Travelling the World

Residents and team members at Gracewell of Church Crookham care home are now over 4 weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.

Now, one month in, they have visited France, England, Italy, and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.

In week one residents dived into the full French culinary experience, with their activities coordinator teaching them all about French wine and how to taste it with different types of cheeses’. Bon appetite!

In their second week residents arrived back in the UK just in time for the Queen’s birthday, where, in commemoration, a charity cake sale was held. Later into the week residents and team members hosted a big celebration for St. Georges Day, with a feast of traditional fish & chips and Morris dancing by the team members.

The following week everybody was packing their bags for another trip abroad. Arriving in Italy, residents were tasked with drawing the Mona Lisa and everybody dressed up in Italian Mafia inspired outfits. With no trip to Italy recognisable without its food, the week was topped off with a huge Italian feast prepared by the care home’s fantastic culinary team.

Most recently, week four saw residents and team members head to the sunny Mediterranean for a trip to Greece. During this visit everybody dressed up as Greek gods and goddesses and the team members danced the Zorba. After so much excitement, a Greek inspired lunch was put on by the wonderful dining team for the residents.

Bill, a resident at the home, noted, “It’s a very good idea, and really interesting. I’ve learned things about the countries I didn’t know”, adding that, “The activities team have done a fantastic job and are working very hard to entertain us. I personally like when they dress up in the countries’ costume!”

Janie, who also lives at Gracewell of Church Crookham Care Home, iterated these points, saying, “It’s a lovely idea, it gives a good insight into the country where we are ‘sailing’ each week. It is a huge project involving most of the team members in the home, and I love it as it’s given me plenty of fond memories from my travels and many visits to all these different countries.”

For the remaining weeks, Gracewell of Church Crookham will go on to visit countries including South Africa, Mexico, China and India.

The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Gracewell Healthcare’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
