Residents and team members at Gracewell of Sway care home are well over four weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.
One month in, they have visited France, England, Italy, and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
In week one, residents and team members boarded the ferry to France. Here they relished true French cuisine, enjoying homemade French crepe suzette followed by a three-course lunch which included delicious salmon en croute. Later, they concluded their day of food with an evening of fine cheese and authentic wine tasting, delivered by their very own French chef.
Gracewell of Sway then arrived back into the UK for a fun filled week. Their staycation began with St Georges Day celebrations, where they indulged on cream tea and cakes, before later into the week transforming their beautiful gardens into a beach for a day. Residents and team members thoroughly enjoyed this, joining in with the construction of sandcastles, playing hook-a-duck and coconut shy, as well as relishing musical entertainment, candy floss, and plenty of Pimm’s. After a much-enjoyed week, residents were treated to a tasty British fish and chips lunch.
Their visit back home was short but sweet, with a visit to Italy the following week. With no trip to Italy complete without its food, residents indulged in an Italian three course lunch, complimented by a final course of homemade tiramisu, as well as taking part in a pasta and gnocchi demonstration and sun-dried tomato focaccia bread tasting. Later into the afternoon staff and residents went head-to-head in a game of Frisbee golf, before closing off their trip with a traditional Italian game of prize tombola and welcome glass of aperol spritz.
Most recently, the care home headed a short distance across the Mediterranean to Greece. Another fantastic week included reflections by the residents about their favourite memories and previous travels to the country, sharing some fascinating stories and insight into their adventures. The highlight of their trip to Greece was a visit to the capital, Athens, where residents and team members hosted their own mini-Olympic games. After such excitement, residents settled down to enjoy some magnificent Greek cuisine, including Lamb Kleftiko and Revani Cake, as well as afternoon tea with homemade Turkish delight provided by the fantastic catering team.
Speaking of the campaign so far, resident at Gracewell of Sway, Anne Houlihan, said: “What an exciting time to arrive at Gracewell of Sway! I thoroughly enjoyed cocktails in Italy and the Olympics in Athens- it has made making friends so much easier. I am looking forward to visiting more countries and having lots more fun along the way.”
Athea France, also at the care home, added, “The highlight of my week has been the chance to enjoy all the delicious food and trying new and exciting themed lunches. The tiramisu reminded me of being back in my own kitchen.”
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Gracewell Healthcare’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
