Gracewell of Kentford Care Home Celebrates Four Weeks of Travelling the World

Residents and team members at Gracewell of Kentford care home are now over 4 weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.

Now, one month in, they have visited France, England, Italy and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.

In their first week, the care home boarded the Kentford cruise liner to France! Here they experienced the Tour de France on the motor view bike, before getting stuck into some French language lessons, baking of baguettes, and French food tasting with a quiz.

The residents then arrived back in the UK just in time to celebrate an event filled week! For the Queen’s birthday residents marked the occasion with some afternoon tea. Later into the week all at Gracewell of Kentford celebrated St George's Day with traditional British snack food and drinks, accompanied by great entertainment that included quizzes, an attempt at recreating British artist L.S Lowry’s paintings, and Morris dancing!

The residents were not home for long and were back on the cruise liner for a trip to sunny Italy. Upon arrival, everybody got stuck in straight away to the true Italian experience. They took a virtual tour of the ancient city of Rome, were educated on the Italian language and culture from Lisa Ward, and attempted craft challenges ranging from a recreation of Michalangelo’s famous Sistine chapel ceiling painting, to the making and painting of a life size gondola. Of course, no trip to Italy is complete without its food, and later into the day residents and team members settled down to watch the Italian Job with homemade popcorn and baked ciabatta rolls.

In week four residents and team members headed a short distance across the Mediterranean Sea to Greece. Here they learnt the Greek language, held their own Olympics, and got stuck into some crafting of Medusa and laurel leaf crowns, as well as making some Greek embroidered bookmarks. To finish off the week residents were treated to quiz entertainment and Greek food and drink - supplied by the fantastic care home catering team.

Speaking on the campaign so far, Lynne Littlewood said: “It has been great visiting different countries. I have really enjoyed it because it has bought back so many fond memories and reminded me of exactly what it was like when I went on holiday to different places. I loved France and enjoyed dressing up for the celebrations and loved the French food tasting sessions as it is my favourite type of food.”

Frances Gale, added, “I have found it very interesting so far. I am always learning something new. I have loved to see the traditional clothes worn and to see how people of that nationality live. Hearing about different cultures from different countries has been very interesting and getting to take part in traditional activities from the country is brilliant.”

For the remaining eight weeks, Gracewell of Kentford will go on to visit countries including South Africa, Mexico, China and India.

The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Gracewell HealthCare’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
