Residents and team members at Gracewell of Salisbury care home are now over four weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.
Now, one month in, they have visited the UK, Spain, Italy and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
Starting their trip in the UK, Gracewell of Salisbury organised their own ‘Great British Bake Off’ competition, which included special guest ‘appearances’ from presenters Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. The result of the competition was a selection of British-inspired cakes, made by residents with the help of team members.
The next destination in their journey was Spain, where residents at the care home enjoyed Spanish music throughout the week. A special tasting session of traditional tapas was also arranged for residents on the last day of their visit to the country.
Moving on to Italy, Gracewell of Salisbury created their very own Gondola to visit Venice through travel videos. And, being in the home of pizza, residents enjoyed a pizza-making morning with the help of the care home’s dining team.
Landing in their most recent destination of Greece, residents took part in numerous arts and crafts sessions. This included creating and decorating traditional Greek pots and even a mosaic of their local Salisbury Cathedral. The care home is now planning to frame this mosaic for all residents, team members and visitors to enjoy.
Speaking of their journey, Peggy Chipperfield, a resident at the care home, said she has enjoyed the various tasting sessions of each destination as this reminded her of holidays with her family. Mary Kilner, another resident at Gracewell of Salisbury, has enjoyed the arts and crafts activities which have taken place in each country, and particularly enjoyed the mosaics and pot decorating while in Greece.
Carol Brewster, Homes Admissions Advisor at Gracewell of Salisbury, said:
“Our residents are having such a lovely time as we travel the world. Many have travelled to some of the countries we’ve visited in the past, so it is bringing back lots of happy memories.”
For the remaining eight weeks, Gracewell of Salisbury will go on to visit countries including South Africa, Mexico, China and India.
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Gracewell Healthcare’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
