Gracewell of Sutton Coldfield have long remained dedicated to offering vegan and vegetarian food to its residents and have now been awarded a prize for their efforts.
The home proudly displays a sticker which identifies it as a member of Vegetarian for Life’s UK List, a geographical listing of organisations and care homes that make a special effort to cater for vegetarians and vegans. As a special thank you, roving chef Maggie Lister visited the care home as a representative of the charity to award a luxury hamper full of plant-based goodies.
Vegetarian Ann Kenny, a sous chef at Gracewell of Sutton Coldfield care home, said it was important to offer varied options for residents.
She explained: “We have a set menu on a five-week plan, which includes dishes like couscous stuffed peppers, cranberry and brie tarts. We also do cheese and potato pies and vegetable lasagne. We try not to repeat it over the five weeks.
“It’s important because it’s variety, it’s options. People who eat meat might want to try something new, or some residents, like one gentleman we have, might not eat meat substitutes at all so prefers a proper vegetarian meal like our stir-fry.”
Home Admissions Advisor, Jody Sedgwick, said she was thrilled to receive the hamper.
She commented: “It’s important for families to know that we have an awareness around vegan and vegetarian foods. We are conscious of that and providing different options means a lot to us. The dining experience is such an important part of life and we are proud to offer the healthy choices that we do.”
Gracewell of Sutton Coldfield are proud to be one of only 7% of care homes in the UK that have signed up to the Vegetarian for Life UK List of veggie-friendly care homes.
Amanda Woodvine, Chief Executive of Vegetarian for Life, said: “The vegan and vegetarian options that chefs are creating at Gracewell of Sutton Coldfield look incredible. We are impressed by the commitment that staff have made to support residents wanting plant-based options. They have continuously proved their dedication to catering well and ethically for vegans and vegetarians, which is fantastic.”
Gracewell of Sutton Coldfield now look forward to enjoying the hamper of goodies and creating even more inventive dishes using the ingredients.
