Rowland, Roly to his friends, aged 94, was born in Eton, Berks. He is a much-loved resident at Gracewell of Frome care home.

He fought in World War Two as a Bombardier in the Royal Artillery, rising in the ranks to Sergeant.

After the War, Roly worked for Mars, in Sales, for many years. He then opened his own business, and successfully ran two different Newsagents, one in Hove and one in Haywards Heath.  After he retired he worked as an Accountant, for an Engineering Company.

He was married to the beautiful Joyce, for 65 years, whom he met just after the War ended in 1948. They settled eventually in Verwood, Bournemouth before later moving to Gracewell of Frome.

Roly has been Gracewell of Frome’s Resident Ambassador since his arrival to Gracewell in 2018, initially sharing his role with his best friend, who lived in the next-door suite.

Roly enjoys meeting potential residents and their families.  He is always happy to answer any questions and give them a tour of his home from home suite.  He is always on hand to show new residents around, whilst they are settling in and wears his Resident Ambassador badge, with pride!

Roly said: “Gracewell of Frome is a home from home, and I feel that I am part of a large family. Most of the carers are local and I enjoy sharing local news and hearing about what is going on in their lives. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff here, on all levels. Gracewell of Frome, is a very happy home.”

Jemma Griffiths, Home Manager, said:

“Roly is a remarkable gentleman, always on hand to make people smile, give a cuddle when needed or offer some honest advice. Our residents and relatives go to him as our ambassador, a role in which he fulfils with great enthusiasm.”

Debbie Goodsell, Home Admissions Adviser, added:

“From the moment I met Roly, I knew he would fit in perfectly. He is always bright, upbeat and a very social man.  When you visit him, he always has a Werthers Original sweet on hand. Recently, he has spent time outside re-staining the benches and raised beds, which gives him purpose to his day, as he enjoys being outside in the garden.”
